The Patrol Officer performs general duty police work in the protection of life and property through law enforcement.
PRINCIPAL
Responsibilities:
1.
Perform patrol work on an assigned shift; conduct preliminary investigation and miscellaneous duties in accordance with departmental rules and regulations.
2.
Enforce laws and ordinances; patrol an assigned area during a specific period in a motorized police vehicle or on foot; examine premises of unoccupied buildings or residences in order to discern or confirm suspicious conditions.
3.
Investigate suspicious conditions and complaints and make arrests of persons who violate laws and ordinances.
4.
Operate radar, video camera and intoxilyzer equipment in enforcing traffic laws; accompany prisoners to police station, jail or court and appear in court as arresting officer/witness.
5.
Photograph, fingerprint, and book prisoners into jail; direct traffic and issue violator citations when necessary; work traffic accidents and provide assistance to fire and emergency personnel in assigned area as directed, giving all possible assistance, administering first aid, and preparing necessary reports.
6.
Maintain order in crowds and may occasionally escort parades, funerals, or attend other public gatherings; watch for stolen vehicles and wanted and missing persons; perform investigations and enforce City and State laws pertaining to juvenile offenders; and, respond to criminal complaints and take necessary corrective action.
7.
Provide general information to the public; operate and maintain radio patrol vehicle as required, perform minor maintenance such as adding gas and oil and checking tires; report major malfunctions of police vehicles to the shift commander.
8.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
TYPICAL DECISIONS:
Position requires the Officer to make immediate decisions in enforcing the laws of the City and the State and in giving advice to citizens and persons in custody based on the interpretation of these laws.
Must be able to decide if probable cause exists relating to arrests and searches.
Education:
High school graduate or GED.
Graduation from a basic police academy and successful completion of the State of Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education examination.
Experience:
Prior experience in law enforcement preferred but not required.
Licenses and Certificates:
Texas class C driver's license, Texas Peace Officer's License.
